The author, Dread Pirate, writes of perspective starting with questions and photos to let the reader know that there is more to a mushroom than a mere mushroom. Perspective is vital and variable. Cavalier is a favored view of life with a flair for taking risks. Clever use of photos enhances the message and attracts the reader to go on with the read as the author went on with his adventure on Old Rag Mountain. Motivation is the point of the write after all. Dread Pirate walks on the Dark Side and the Light Side but seems to have a strong bias for the dark over the light. Unlike so many of us, he seems unafraid of the dark. One avoids the mundane by treks to the Dark Side is the presented argument. Short and pithy poems also teach powerful lessons. Shore Leave is a different chapbook, as different as are most naval shore leaves. Like the sailor on leave I was left wanting more.

A rather expressive read with a touch of melancholy and a tiny bit of rage, and the pictures are lovely and serene; a nice contrast.
For those of you familiar with the writings of world wide published author, Dread Pirate, "Shore Leave" will come as a bit of a surprise, but it won't be shocking in light of the fact our favorite sea faring writer is a motivational speaker.
But don't let that sway you, "Shore Leave" isn't all feel good warm fuzzies. It's a personal look into the heart and soul of a philosophical pirate. A perfect blend of prose, short stories and the musings of an intensely private man. There are some chuckles, excellent photography (including an enigmatic self portrait) by the author and Amy D'Orsay as well as my personal favorite piece: "I walk on the Dark Side" which unveils more about the inner workings of a man on Shore Leave.
This book would be a wonderful present for any father, husband, son or brother as it is distinctly masculine, yet tender enough to grace any library. For those who aren't sure what to provide a best man for a wedding, a husband on an anniversary, a young man at graduation or a father on his day, this could be the answer to any one's gift list. I give it a thumbs up and a big "Ahoy Matey!"

Shore Leave brought me straight to my happy place in nature. A place of comfort and stillness. And then, somehow I was educated about cell phones, NASA and the dark side. Very intriguing indeed!
Most of us entertain notions of resolutions and new beginnings with the New Year, a time to break old habits, adopt positive changes and go for that personal makeover. Some choose to go the self-help route. We embrace the latest philosophy and tune in to the mushy ear tickling froth offered by the men and women of media medicine. For all that, we get no closer to the core.
If you want sugar, go to the spa and get your legs done. If you want your ears tickled or your hand held – join a group. Roll up your sleeves sailor and get to work scraping those barnacles. Grab your sextant and read Shore Leave, Taking a Long Walk, a collection of short essays and poetry by DreadPirate.
Be advised - You will want to give more than the cursory read to this collection, listen for the messages between the lines. Remember you are looking to discover what you need to chart that new course. What is it Really all about this thing called Life?
